Canoeing in Alexandra Park

The MyColdhurst team and UProjects have developed a partnership that has helped young people try new and exciting activities including Canoeing and Orienteering in Oldham’s Alexandra Park and Indoor Climbing at the Mahdlo Youth Zone Climbing wall.

Despite some very wet weather conditions the enthusiastic young people walked from the Coldhurst area to Alexandra Park with support workers Sam and Tom.

Throughout the summer break activities at the park included 2 fun Canoe Rafting sessions where the young people had to develop news skills enabling them to work together as a team, time challenges were set to test these new skills and this competitive element became the main objective for the group, very exciting and great fun!

The team also took part in 2 Orienteering sessions. Following instruction on basic navigation techniques and map and compass skills the group were challenged to complete the courses set in the park, working in small teams the young people successfully navigated themselves around the park’s courses. More new skills learned that may help them be more confident and discover the outdoors.

Summer activities also included 4 sessions of indoor climbing at the Mahdlo wall with UProjects climbing instructors. These sessions were a particular hit with some of the young people and Mahdlo memberships were offered to help them continue to take part in this future new Olympic sport. Once again the group were trying something new and developed new specialist climbing skills that built trust, responsibility and self confidence.

MyColdhurst have been proud to work in partnership with The UProjects team this summer. The feedback from all the children and via our sports leaders (Sam and Tom) that have attended the sessions (Climbing,Canoeing Orienteering)has been extremely positive and the young people have been a huge credit to the MyColdhurst group and especially to the area of Coldhurst.
We look forward to working with UProjects in the future and must thank them for their professional approach in delivering all the sessions. be possible.
We look forward to working with all our partners and key stakeholders in the future to continue to provide the help and support to the children from Coldhurst and facilitate access to similar activities provisions.
From this summer cohort the evidence is clear that if there is funding provision and support, then the children in Coldhurst are willing and eager to participate and take advantage- who knows how many leaders that we have helped to create for the future community? - we can confidently state that the MyColdhurst Summer Camp 2019 has been a huge success and let’s hope we can deliver many more similar activities in the future!!”
